Indie dogs, also known as desi dogs, are a vibrant and diverse group of canines found throughout India. They come in all shapes and sizes, with unique personalities and quirks. But understanding their behaviour can be a challenge for those unfamiliar with their ways. My Floppy was an Indie, just that he had a fluffy tail and now Chewy is one as well.. We have friends who’ve adopted indies and we keep swapping stories about their behaviour, habits, the way they talk/express themselves and more.. So, here are some tips to help you decode the secret language of indie dogs and build a trusting relationship with them:
1. Respect their space.
Indie dogs are often wary of strangers. They may bark, growl, or even lunge if they feel threatened. Avoid making direct eye contact or approaching them head-on. Instead, crouch down, avert your gaze, and offer them a treat or some water from a distance. Let them come to you when they’re comfortable.
2. Pay attention to their body language.
A wagging tail doesn’t always mean happiness! Learn to read the subtle cues in an indie dog’s body language. A relaxed posture, lowered ears, and a soft lick on the hand are signs of trust and affection. Conversely, a raised tail, bared teeth, and flattened ears indicate fear or aggression.
3. Be patient and gentle.
Earning the trust of an indie dog takes time and patience. Avoid being overzealous or forceful. Speak in a soft, soothing voice, and offer treats as rewards for positive behaviour. Remember, they’ve likely had a tough life on the streets and may be skittish or fearful.
4. Understand their pack mentality.
Indie dogs are often social creatures who live in packs. They establish hierarchies and communicate through vocalizations and body language. If you encounter a pack of indie dogs, avoid making sudden movements or loud noises. Instead, stay calm and passive, and slowly back away.
5. Be mindful of their needs.
Like all dogs, indie dogs need food, water, shelter, and exercise. If you’re considering adopting an indie dog, be prepared to provide them with a loving and stable home. Take them for regular walks, play with them, and give them plenty of affection.
Building a bond with an indie dog can be an incredibly rewarding experience. These loyal and loving companions offer unconditional love and enrich our lives in countless ways. By understanding their unique behaviour and respecting their boundaries, you can build a strong and lasting friendship with an indie dog.
