We often hear about the importance of letting go—releasing the past, shedding old patterns, and freeing ourselves from what no longer serves us. But there’s another side to this journey that’s just as vital: letting others in.

Letting Go Is Only Half the Work

A few years ago, a long-standing friendship ended, and it was just something that happened- there was no event or incident that happened leading to the break up.  But then it did and I accepted it, and moved on.. While that friendship ended, I let go of whatever emotions or memories that hung on, but then somewhere along the way I also realized letting go also meant making space for new connections. True growth comes when we not only release what weighs us down, but also open ourselves to fresh experiences.

The Courage to Let Someone In

Inviting someone into your life takes courage. I once worked with a colleague who challenged the way I approached my work. At first, I resisted—it was uncomfortable to admit I could learn from someone else. But when I opened my mind, our collaboration became one of the most enriching experiences of my career. Relationships thrive when we’re willing to accept perspectives different from our own.

Vulnerability Builds Trust

Letting someone in also means showing them the parts of yourself you usually keep hidden—your insecurities, small joys, and fears. I remember sharing something deeply personal with a friend, worried they might judge me. Instead, their response was kind and understanding. Vulnerability, I realized, is the bridge that transforms acquaintances into true companions.

Growth Happens Together

Relationships evolve as we do. My partner and I have very different habits—but instead of clashing, we’ve learned to navigate them together. Disagreements aren’t failures; they’re opportunities to practice patience, empathy, and compromise. When both people commit to learning from each other, growth becomes mutual and enduring.

The Gift of Openness

Whether it’s a friend, partner, or colleague, letting someone in transforms ordinary interactions into meaningful connections. Combining the act of letting go with the willingness to let someone in allows relationships to become spaces of learning, joy, and shared growth.

So, as we practice letting go of what no longer serves us, let’s also practice letting in—with openness, courage, and a commitment to grow together. That’s how friendships deepen, partnerships thrive, and connections truly last…
