When we first landed in Bangalore a year ago, we were braced for the usual logistical hurdles. Top of the list? The dreaded gas connection. Knowing it would take time to navigate the paperwork and delivery, we bought a single induction stove as a temporary fix. We needed to get cooking immediately—mostly because Chewy (our resident four-legged furball) doesn’t do “delayed meals.” and we didnt want to feed him restaurant food.. Him having a routine mattered the most and thus certain decisions were made, and no regrets~
Fast forward 365 days, and that “temporary fix” has become our permanent way of life. We haven’t looked back once.
Myths vs. Reality: Life on the Induction Lane
If you’re wondering how we survived a whole year without a blue flame, here is the breakdown of why it’s been surprisingly smooth sailing:
-
The Power Cut Scare: We had experienced the odd power cut in Pune, and so knew there might be some in Bangalore as well.. But that said, they were far and few between. In a year, the days we couldn’t cook due to a blackout can be counted on one hand.
-
The “Special Utensil” Tax: There’s a myth that finding induction-compatible pans is a chore. It’s really not! From our daily pressure cooker to frying pans, almost everything we need is readily available. If a magnet sticks to the bottom, you’re good to go. Infact, when we went to buy a new pressure cooker, the shopcooker told us to steer clear of the ones with that extra plate with spots at the bottom, incl Prestige. We use a brand called Chef’s tone and it works like a charm~
-
The “Real Food” Factor: There is zero compromise on the menu. Whether it’s a slow-cooked dal or a quick stir-fry, the induction handles it all.
Our Small (But Mighty) Kitchen Ecosystem
Perhaps the reason we don’t miss the gas stove is that we’ve built a great “support team” of appliances. Being just two adults and now two dogs, this setup is incredibly efficient:
| Appliance | Its Role in Our Lives |
| Induction Stove | The workhorse for pressure cooking and main meals. |
| Airfryer | For everything crispy (and healthier). |
| Microwave & Toaster | The reheating and breakfast legends. |
| The InstaCup | Our secret weapon. It makes chai and boils eggs perfectly—and is a lifesaver even during those rare power blips. |
Is it for everyone?
Maybe it works so well because of our family size. For a household of two humans and two pups, it’s clean, fast, and surprisingly easy to manage. No more waiting for the gas cylinder delivery man or worrying about leaks. In Chennai, my family has an induction stove, but primarily use it to boil milk for coffee or tea…
Moving to a new city is all about adapting, and this is one change that actually made our lives simpler. We came for the weather, stayed for the ease of induction cooking!
