A Little Taste of Korea at Kimchi, JP Nagar

After a few days of planning, and talking about catching up outside our group meets, the dinner plan was in place. The restuarant we had picked was Kimchi Korean Restaurant in JP Nagar. I’ve seen the sign board couple of times when driving down the road, but this was my 1st visit. Small, obscure, and no fancy decor /setting etc but turned out to be one of those places. Like I said, it’s a small, cosy restaurant — nothing fancy or sprawling, but comfortable enough to settle in and focus on what really matters: the food. And honestly, everything we ate was so good.

It was bright and sunny when we reconfirmed the plans, and then out of the blue – around 6.45/7pm it started to drizzle. Thankfully, it stopped by the time I reached the venue..  Friend was already there, settled in, got comfortable and started skimming through the menu.. Some familiar dishes and some new caught my eye~

We placed our order, and within minutes a wide range of Korean sides arrived at our table — tempura, kimchi [tasted quite different from the one i make, spicy too but yumm] , pickled radish, a refreshing cucumber-and-noodle preparation, and what looked like tiny scallion pancakes. I love restaurants that give you these little tastes and textures alongside the main meal; there was something different going on with every bite.

Then came the haemul pajeon, the Korean pancake. Crisp around the edges, packed with flavour + egg and wonderfully savoury, it disappeared rather quickly. We had this with the side of soya sauce dip.

We also ordered the Kkampungi [Korean fried chicken], coated in a sweet-and-spicy sauce. Sticky, flavourful and seriously moreish — the kind of dish that makes you reach for just one more piece even when you’re already full. And because apparently we hadn’t ordered enough, we took home a portion of kimbap — Korean rice, vegetables and filling rolled in seaweed. It looks a little like sushi, but tastes quite different, and made for a rather excellent takeaway.

Overall, Kimchi is the kind of place I’d happily return to — especially when the craving for Korean food hits. Small, unpretentious, reasonably priced and, most importantly, delicious. Infact, want to revisit with P, and try some of the other dishes.. After dinner, we took a ride on the world’s slowest elevator to the ground floor, and walked a bit before heading back home.. It was a lovely memorable evening~ Sometimes, that’s all you really need from an evening ❤️
